THE CHALLENGE

As part of the Craigieburn Rd duplication works many of the existing services required relocation or protection. The extensive upgrade works required various movements of heavy equipment and sub-grade preparation. As part of this sub-grade preparation, unsuitable material needed to be removed and replaced with class specific material, and compacted to design requirements using heavy vibrating rollers. It is this additional load bearing and vibration which presented risk to the existing services and a solution was required to protect the assets.

OUR SOLUTION

The project and asset owners solution was to encase services that could be a risk in stabilised sand. To achieve this we deployed multiple hydro excavation units to safety remove the soil surrounding the assets, ensuring that the assets were still supported throughout the process. Following this the assets were inspected and a specified layer of stabilised sand was used to encase the asset, increasing its load resistance and protecting it from vibration.

THE RESULTS

Construction of the additional lanes was enabled without the risk of damaging any of the existing infrastructure.
