THE CHALLENGE
The Melbourne Airport Rail system project faced significant scheduling challenges, with a misalignment between the end cut-over dates and the dates approved in the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA).
This discrepancy posed a risk of considerable delays to the project timeline. An expedited process for asset installation became crucial to meet the looming Project Completion (PC) deadline.
The rigidity of the schedule meant that delaying the cut-over dates to the next available window was not an option, putting the project at risk of missing critical milestones and incurring penalties.
OUR SOLUTION
In response to this critical challenge, Livic was enlisted to devise and execute an accelerated schedule. Understanding the project’s significance and the tight timeframe, we deployed two advanced high-powered Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) rock rigs.
These rigs were operated around the clock in a non-stop 24/7 effort over 14 consecutive shifts. This intensive operational approach was strategically planned to ensure timely completion, allowing for the network cut-overs to occur before the MoA’s expiration date.

THE RESULTS
The proactive and intensive solution Livic provided for the Melbourne Airport Rail system project was pivotal. By meeting the crucial PC dates, we not only ensured the project remained on track but also significantly mitigated potential cost overruns, thus enhancing the project’s financial returns.
The successful installation of 3x 100m x 450mm HDPE sleeves in exceptionally hard rock, with a strength exceeding 100mpa, and the subsequent pulling through of 3x 180mm HPE conduits within these sleeves, exemplified our technical prowess and operational efficiency.
